Long-term car rental for expats in Morocco: documents, licence and conditions

Arriving in Morocco with a two-year work contract, or to work remotely for a season, quickly raises the car question. Buying means registering, insuring, then reselling before you leave. Long-term rental avoids all of that. Here is what you need to set it up.

The documents we ask for

• •A valid passport, and the residence card if you already have it
• •A driving licence held for at least two years
• •Proof of address in Morocco: lease, rent receipt, or a host's attestation
• •Proof of income: work contract, payslips, or statements for the self-employed

If you do not have a residence card yet, the work contract and passport are usually enough to start while the card is being issued. Say so in the quote request, the file adapts.

The foreign driving licence

A European, British, North American or Gulf licence is accepted as is to drive in Morocco as a visitor. Once you are a resident, the general rule is that the foreign licence must be exchanged for a Moroccan one within a year of obtaining the residence card. The details depend on your home country and the agreements in force, to be checked with NARSA or your consulate. For long-term rental, a valid foreign licence is enough at signature.

Choosing the duration

Match the contract length to your stay: 12, 18, 24 or 36 months. The longer the duration, the lower the rate. A Dacia Sandero goes from 5,520 dirhams excluding VAT per month over 12 months to 3,920 over 36 months. If your departure date is uncertain, take the shortest duration you are sure of and talk to us about an extension when the time comes.

What changes compared to buying

No registration paperwork, no road tax to pay, no insurance to negotiate every year. If the car breaks down, you call assistance and a replacement vehicle arrives. On the day you leave, you return the car and that is it, with no classified ad and no buyer to find in the last week.
